Frequently Asked Questions

What's Silver Surfers about?

Promoting independent living for older people by providing access to public services through the Internet.

Using information technology to provide easy access to information about facilities for older people in Warwickshire.

Helping older people communicate with each other, with relatives and with local community organisations, by using information technology.

Providing training to help older people use information technology to gain access to the Internet.

Where is the money coming from?

Originally the Government gave Nuneaton & Bedworth funding to help people aged over 50 to access public services through the Internet: this funding has now run out. Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council are providing funding to help the Project continue.

Who is it for?

Generally for people aged over 50 (and their carers) who live in Warwickshire. Internet access facilities have been provided in public places and in some sheltered housing schemes.

What services will I be able to access?

Many public services are accessible via the Internet including local Council services, health, crime reporting, passport application and many others. Once you have access to the Internet you will also be able to shop from home, book holidays, email your relatives and get access to a host of information, from theatre to gardening to war-time reminiscence.

Will I be able to access the Internet using public facilities?

You can access the Internet at Silver Surfers drop in sessions at libraries, some older people's day centres, sheltered housing and other places where older people live or visit regularly. You can also use existing facilities in places such as Libraries and Community Centres or anywhere else that provides Internet access.

For those living in Nuneaton and Bedworth, there are Silver Surfers computers in the Town Hall reception area

Is there any training?

We provide training on how to access the Internet and send/receive emails for those in sheltered housing schemes/day centres that wish to have an Internet facility installed at their venue.

There are also Silver Surfers drop in sessions that run from various venues across Warwickshire, where volunteers are available to support you. For details of your nearest venue click drop ins.

Where is it based?

The Project Team is based in the Town Hall in Coton Road, Nuneaton, but is active across Warwickshire and in Coventry city centre.

I can already use the Internet, can I help?

Yes, we are looking for people who would like to volunteer to help older people who are nervous of Information Technology. For more information click Volunteering.
