Continence AdvisorContact: Tracey SheridanBramcote Hospital Tel: 024 7635 3969 Details of serviceThe Continence Advisor is a specialist nurse whose primary role is to co-ordinate a service that enables people who suffer with bladder and bowel problems to receive up to date evidence-based treatment. The Advisor works within a multidisciplinary service providing education to the public and other health care professionals. The Advisor produces guidelines, practices and policies to support practice within the community and in hospital. The Advisor co-ordinates 5 clinics per week and provides home assessments for immobile patients. In hospitals, many patients can be assessed on the wards prior to discharge, and joint assessments with ward nurses ensures skills are disseminated to others. The aim of the service is to promote continence and to implement treatment programmes. In 30% of patients complete cure may not be possible, therefore help is given to manage the problem. The Continence Advisor has a responsibility to ensure resources are made available and that they are used appropriately. All patients who suffer with a bladder or bowel problem are entitled to a full Comprehensive Assessment, a bladder education programme if needed and regular follow-ups.
